Profile

Christian Nolte is the Senior Physician of the Department of Neurology with Experimental Neurology and heads both the Clinical Studies Team (CSB Trial Team) at the Centre for Stroke Research Berlin (CSB) and (in collaboration) the certified, transregional Stroke Unit at Charité Campus Benjamin Franklin (CBF). He manages the Thrombolysis and Endovascular Recanalisation Register of the CBF. His main scientific interest is the interaction between heart and brain and the treatment of acute ischemic strokes.

Impetus
Numerous recommendations for stroke treatments are based on the results of randomised controlled trials (RCTs). Patients included in those trials do not necessarily mirror the characteristics of typical everyday stroke patients, but meet specific inclusion criteria. We investigate stroke treatments "in real life", outside of RCTs. We examine what factors influence the treatment process in everyday practice. We also identify, on the one hand, decisive factors for a good prognosis and, on the other hand, question established treatment practices. We only became aware of many prognostic factors thanks to new diagnostic test procedures (e.g. MRI), which were partially still unknown, when specific RCTs were carried out, e.g. cerebral microbleeds, cavernomas or the so-called "hyperintense vessel sign". Several of our works are cited in the current guidelines for stroke treatment of the American Heart Association (AHA).

This prospective observational study is examining whether an enhanced MRI investigation leads to a significant increase of the findings regarding the cause of stroke.

The primary goal of the "PRAISE" ("Prediction of Acute Coronary Syndrome in Acute Ischemic Stroke") study is to develop a diagnostic algorithm that allows the prediction of acute coronary syndrome in stroke patients.
